Congratulations on your pregnancy! Your first prenatal visit is a milestone moment, and it is completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. This appointment lays the groundwork for a healthy pregnancy and gives your provider the information they need to support you and your baby over the coming months.
When Should You Schedule Your First Visit?
Most OB/GYN practices recommend scheduling your first prenatal appointment between 6 and 10 weeks of pregnancy, counted from the first day of your last menstrual period. If you have a history of high-risk pregnancies, chronic health conditions, or are experiencing symptoms like heavy bleeding or severe pain, call your provider right away rather than waiting.
At Garden OB/GYN, we prioritize getting expectant mothers in early so we can establish a care plan from the very start.
What Happens During the Visit?
Your first prenatal visit is typically the longest appointment you will have during pregnancy. Expect it to last about 45 minutes to an hour. Here is what it usually includes:
- Medical history review: Your provider will ask about your personal and family medical history, any previous pregnancies, medications you take, and your lifestyle habits.
- Physical exam: This includes a general physical, a pelvic exam, and a breast exam. Your blood pressure, weight, and height will be recorded.
- Lab work: Blood tests check your blood type, Rh factor, iron levels, immunity to rubella, and screen for conditions like HIV, hepatitis B, and syphilis. A urine test checks for infections and protein levels.
- Ultrasound: Many providers perform an early ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy, estimate your due date, and check for a heartbeat. Depending on how early you are, this may be a transvaginal ultrasound.
- Due date calculation: Your provider will confirm or adjust your estimated due date based on ultrasound measurements and your last menstrual period.
What to Bring
Being prepared will help your visit go smoothly. Bring the following:
- Your insurance card and photo ID
- A list of all medications, vitamins, and supplements you currently take
- The date of your last menstrual period
- Any relevant medical records, especially if you are transferring from another provider
- A list of questions you want to ask
Questions to Ask Your Provider
Your first visit is the perfect time to get answers. Consider asking:
- What prenatal vitamins do you recommend?
- Are there foods or activities I should avoid?
- What symptoms are normal, and which ones should prompt a call?
- What is the schedule for future prenatal visits?
- What genetic testing options are available, and do you recommend them for me?
- Who covers for you if you are unavailable when I go into labor?
Do not hesitate to write questions down as they come to you in the days before your appointment. No question is too small when it comes to your health and your baby's wellbeing.
