Detailed cervical examination

About Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure that gives your provider a magnified, close-up view of your cervix to evaluate abnormal cells detected during a Pap smear or HPV test. At Garden OB/GYN, colposcopies are performed in-office by experienced gynecologists who guide you through the process and ensure your comfort throughout the examination.

What to Expect

During a colposcopy, your provider uses a colposcope — a magnifying instrument — to closely examine the cervix after applying a mild solution that highlights abnormal areas. If suspicious tissue is found, a small biopsy may be taken for laboratory analysis. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes. You may experience mild cramping or spotting afterward, but most women resume normal activities the same day.

Who Is This For?

Women who have received abnormal Pap smear results, positive high-risk HPV tests, or who have visible cervical abnormalities that need further evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a colposcopy painful?
Most women describe it as mildly uncomfortable, similar to a Pap smear. If a biopsy is needed, you may feel a brief pinch or cramp.
How long do results take?
Biopsy results are typically available within 1-2 weeks. Your provider will contact you to discuss findings and any recommended next steps.
What should I do after the procedure?
Avoid tampons, intercourse, and douching for 48 hours after a biopsy. Mild spotting and cramping are normal.
Does an abnormal colposcopy mean cancer?
Not necessarily. Most abnormal findings represent precancerous changes that can be monitored or treated before they become cancerous.
