Mammogram

In-house 3D mammography for early breast cancer detection

About Mammogram

Garden OB/GYN offers state-of-the-art 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) right in our offices — no separate radiology appointment needed. 3D mammography creates a detailed, layer-by-layer image of the breast, detecting cancers up to 40% earlier than traditional 2D mammograms, especially in women with dense breast tissue. Our in-house mammography program at select locations means you can get screened during the same visit as your annual exam, making breast health convenient and accessible.

What to Expect

During your 3D mammogram, a technologist will position your breast on the mammography unit and apply gentle compression to get the clearest images. The machine takes multiple low-dose X-rays from different angles, which a computer assembles into a detailed 3D image. The entire process takes about 15-20 minutes. You may feel brief pressure during compression, but it lasts only a few seconds per image. Results are typically available within a few business days, and your provider will contact you to discuss findings.

Who Is This For?

Women age 40 and older should have annual mammograms. Women with a family history of breast cancer, genetic risk factors (such as BRCA mutations), or dense breast tissue may benefit from starting earlier or having additional screening. Talk to your provider about the right screening schedule for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 3D mammography?
3D mammography, or tomosynthesis, takes multiple X-ray images of the breast from different angles and creates a layered, three-dimensional view. This technology detects more cancers and reduces false positives compared to traditional 2D mammograms.
Which locations have mammography?
In-house 3D mammography is available at our Brooklyn, Queens, and Lake Success locations. You can schedule your mammogram alongside your regular appointment for maximum convenience.
How often should I get a mammogram?
Most guidelines recommend annual mammograms starting at age 40. Women with higher risk factors may begin at 30 or earlier. Your provider will recommend a screening schedule based on your personal and family history.
Is a mammogram painful?
You may feel pressure or discomfort during breast compression, but it only lasts a few seconds. Most women find it tolerable. If you are sensitive, consider scheduling your mammogram a week after your period when breasts are less tender.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed for a screening mammogram at Garden OB/GYN. Simply schedule your appointment at one of our locations with in-house mammography.
Is mammography covered by insurance?
Yes, most insurance plans cover annual screening mammograms at no out-of-pocket cost for women 40 and older under the Affordable Care Act. Contact your insurance provider to confirm your specific coverage.
